Maplewood Online - Lord & Taylor Millburn - Raymond Loewy Toggle navigation Lord & Taylor Millburn - Raymond Loewy Lord & Taylor Millburn - Raymond Loewy archived Edited When I was a kid, pretty much anything decent we wore was from Lord and Taylor in Millburn. Went to one near me recently to load up on clearance shirts... $16.99 for $69.99 dress shirts is cheaper than Target. Got me thinking... That was an interesting building. The huge round A/C vents are probably the most memorable part. But anyway, turns out it was designed by Raymond Loewy in 1949 so the Library of Congress has tons of pictures. http://www.loc.gov/search/?q=Lord+and+taylor+millburn It's gone now, but remember how huge that little Christmas tree in this picture had become? That's actually in Springfield. Shame to see it rot a little more each time I pass by. That looks like what is currently the CVS by Trader Joes, no? It's not Springfield. It's Milburn. Oh right that's the cvs HHamel - the building you're thinking of was Saks 5th Avenue. My mom worked at Millburn L & T as a gift wrapper. So this is CVS/Trader Joe now? said:So this is CVS/Trader Joe now? Yes said:My mom worked at Millburn L & T as a gift wrapper. After Christmas they were taking down the displays and she asked if she could have some of the ornaments they were getting rid of. Her boss said yes. I now have those, a ton of old glass teal ornaments. I believe she said that they had used all one color to try to look modern. The Bird Cage Restaurant was there. Edited Lunch at The Bird Cage was a treat for my sister and me on Saturdays with my mother. We'd always order the same thing- Cobb salad for my mother, BLTs for my sister and I, and we'd split the frozen yoghurt with apple topping for dessert. Edited I spent so many Saturdays at Lord and Taylor with my aunt. The bird cage upstairs. We'd have turkey clubs. Wasn't this where Santa flew in on the helicopter too? We alternated between lord and Taylor ad Saks. . The Millburn L&T is now the building with CVS, Trader Joe's, Pet Smart, Motion Fitness, a medical suite (more?) on Millburn Avenue. The Millburn Avenue srore was still open when we first moved here in 1979. It closed when Lord and Taylor opened at Livingston Mall. It was kind of cool having a first class department store, more or less in your backyard. That reminds me of the L&T still in operation in Westfield. I love that such a great store is a staple of a vibrant downtown. And, I agree, if you use coupons & sales well you get far better quality and nicer clothes for not much more than the crappy stuff at Target. That must have been the restaurant my aunt used to take me and my cousin when I'd come to visit them in Short Hills. I was very young, and they used to put me on the Erie Lackawanna from Hoboken with the rattan seats. Which started my love affair with trains. BTW, we had tuna salad sandwiches for lunch. Lord & Taylor was still in Millburn when we moved to SO in 1986. The space in Livingston Mall that is now L&T was a Hahne's, and there were other Hahne's stores in Newark and Montclair. One thing that I remember about the Millburn L&T is that they sold linens and curtains. I don't think that any Lord & Taylors (or Saks, or others of what we think of as department stores) do that any more. When I was a little girl growing up in Texas, my grandparents lived on Wyoming Avenue in Millburn. My grandmother always shopped at that L&T for beautiful dresses for my sister and me for our birthdays and Christmas. When I moved here in 1986 it was still open, but not much longer after that. I remember the "going out of business" sale when they closed it and then the building was empty for a long time before it was done over into the center that they have now. When we moved to our second home in Maplewood, I remember shopping at the L&T in that location. Having come from nyc, it was one place I could drive to without getting lost! Plus....no sales tax. When we moved here, the a Revco was in the space of the current CVS. FreshFields was where Trader Joes'/Pet Smart are now. And there was store called The Home Store (I think) where the Short Hills Surgical Center and Motion Fitness are now. Lord and Taylor moved to the Livingston Mall, just before they started renovating The Mall At Short Hills. When I first moved here in 1975, Short Hills Mall, as it was called in those days, was actually, an all outside Shpping area. We used to drive there from Bergen County to shop on Sundays. Frankly I liked it better the old way (just like the Garden State Plaza in Paramus). Just old fashioned, I guess. I thought the stores were much more interesting and a whole lot less frufru. said: said:Lord and Taylor moved to the Livingston Mall, just before they started renovating The Mall At Short Hills. Yes, and there was an FAO Schwartz toy store there, that actually had a hair cutting area, used to get my kids haircuts there. There was a a dept. store called teppers, and a Bloomingdales, and some kind of book store, can't remember the name. Kind of off the topic, the saks 5th ave store was mentioned, on Milburn ave near Springfield. When did it close? My memory says late 70's. It it an occasional argument between my friends as to the exact year. It was still open when I moved here in '82 and I think at least for three years after that. Don't remember the exact year, but it did close when the Then "new" Short Hills Mall opened and relocated there. It was open in'88. It closed a few years after that. It was no longer open in 88. I worked for my way ex girl friends father, shadiest electrician you ever met, repairing the lights in the empty parking lot in 86 It was definitely still open in '86 and I would have said for at least a couple of years after that.
