Data as of April 29, 2025.What Are Corporate Bond Funds?Corporate bond portfolios concentrate on investment-grade bonds issued by corporations in US dollars, which tend to have more credit risk than government or agency-backed bonds. These portfolios hold more than 65% of their assets in corporate debt, less than 40% of their assets in non-US debt, less than 35% in below-investment-grade debt, and durations that typically range between 75% and 150% of the three-year average of the effective duration of the Core Bond Index.Screening for the Top-Performing Corporate Bond FundsTo find the best corporate bond funds, we looked at returns data from the past one, three, and five years using data available in Morningstar Direct. We screened for open-ended and exchange-traded funds in the top 33% of the category using their lowest-cost primary share classes for those periods. We also filtered for funds with a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze, Silver, or Gold. We excluded funds with assets under $100 million and analyst coverage that was not 100%. This left four funds.iShares 5-10 Year Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF: Silver: ★★★★Over the past year, the $14.7 billion iShares 5-10 Year Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF rose 8.94%, while the average fund in its category rose 7.57%. The iShares fund, which launched in January 2007, has climbed 4.20% over the past three years and gained 1.54% over the past five years. “IShares 5-10 Year Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF provides broadly diversified exposure to intermediate-term investment-grade corporate bonds at an attractive price tag.“The fund tracks the ICE BofA 5-10 Year US Corporate Index. The index captures investment-grade, US-dollar-denominated corporate bonds with between 5 and 10 years remaining until maturity. Eligible bonds must have at least $250 million par amount outstanding.“The fund’s duration tends to be slightly shorter than that of the category average. Peers in the corporate bond Morningstar Category tend to cast a wider net than the fund, and many capture the full maturity spectrum. “This fund can underperform category peers during extreme market stress when investors prefer short-term bonds. Nonetheless, the fund has behaved as expected given its maturity exposure, and its modular construction should provide investors with more precision in building their portfolio allocation. The fund’s credit risk profile and performance during major credit shocks have been similar to the category average.”—Lan Anh Tran, analystSchwab 5-10 Year Corporate Bond ETF: Silver: ★★★★Over the past year, the $8.4 billion Schwab 5-10 Year Corporate Bond ETF rose 8.83%, while the average fund in its category rose 7.57%. The Charles Schwab fund, which launched in October 2019, has climbed 4.00% over the past three years and gained 1.34% over the past five years. SPDR Portfolio Intermediate Term Corporate Bond ETF: Silver: ★★★★★Over the past year, the $9.1 billion SPDR Portfolio Intermediate Term Corporate Bond ETF rose 8.05%, while the average fund in its category rose 7.57%. The State Street fund, which launched in February 2009, has climbed 4.12% over the past three years and gained 1.87% over the past five years.“The fund tracks the Bloomberg US Intermediate Corporate Bond Index, which captures investment-grade corporate bonds with one to 10 years remaining to maturity. The index excludes certain types of bonds such as floating-rate bonds, contingent capital securities, bonds with equity features, and eurobonds without SEC registration. Eligible bonds must have at least $300 million in outstanding face value, which ensures the index is investable. The index weights selected bonds by their market value.“By definition, the fund includes short-term bonds and excludes long-term bonds, which translates to a shorter duration than its category peers. Its average duration tends to trail that of the category average by around two years.“Similar to other broad, market-value-weighted passive funds in its category, the fund has a slightly more conservative credit profile than its actively managed peers ... The fund has often outperformed the category average during major credit shocks thanks to its lower credit risk.“The fund might miss out when yields on long-term bonds fall or when the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, but its lower volatility should compensate and provide some ballast during stressful markets. The Vanguard fund, which launched in November 2009, has climbed 3.99% over the past three years and gained 1.33% over the past five years.“The Bloomberg US 5-10 Year Corporate Bond Index, which underpins this fund, sweeps in investment-grade corporate bonds with five to 10 years remaining to maturity. The index excludes floating-rate bonds, eurobonds without SEC registration, contingent capital securities, and bonds with equity features. Eligible bonds must also have at least $300 million outstanding in face value, which ensures the index’s investability.“Despite a high stake in bonds rated BBB, the fund has a relatively muted credit risk profile compared with its category peers. This has provided some protection from widening credit spreads during major credit shocks. The fund’s average duration has fallen short relative to the category average and broader corporate bond market because of its intermediate focus.“While annual fees are cheap, buyers of this strategy’s mutual fund share classes are subject to a 0.25% purchase fee intended to minimize the impact of transaction costs on the fund. This benefits current fundholders at the expense of new investors.
