When I bought a house in TV, I found myself put off by all the houses with tile floors—I came nowhere near choosing any of them—and I chose a house with nice wall-to-wall carpet (except in the bathrooms and kitchen, of course). Not everyone agrees with me, but some would. I would say that if you can’t stand your carpet anymore and want to replace it, use tile if you like, but I would suggest the kind that is light grey and looks like three foot long planks of barn wood. It’s less likely to show the dust. I put 800 square feet of dark grey Italian porcelain tile in one house I built, along with light grey industrial carpet in the rest of the house, and I always loved it. (Industrial carpet was sturdy, didn’t trip people, and was only about $5 a yard. It had a very clean look, as it was low pile.), Peter, We've been looking for area rugs for more than a year. We hit all of the obvioius local stops: Southern Lifestyles, Rug World, Best Flooring, Target, Home Depot, and Lowes, and of course, the internet--and had almost given up., We also need to find some area rugs for our living room and dining room. #2 .
Area rugs can be used to dampen sound and are easier to clean or replace. If in the future one of us has an issue that would require the use of a walking aid, mobility is much easier without carpet. mdsimon1, We have a sliding glass (floor to ceiling) enclosed lanai and opted for tile with accent rugs. We enjoy opening the windows for the breeze occasionally and we will forget to close them before we leave the house. Once in a while that unexpected rainstorm pops up and we have had wet tile which is fine. Much better than wet carpet., I've been using a regular indoor/outdoor carpet (8 X 12) under our patio set. Yes it gets wet on the edge near the outside but so far no mold. I like the feel of the carpet (very thin and made for outdoors - bought at Target) and it makes the area look like more of a normal sitting area IMHO., We removed all of our carpet and installed laminate flooring throughout including bedrooms . Floor masters did the work good price great selection of flooring. Love the change easy upkeep looks great. Area rugs enhance the flooring., This time we used porcelain again but the type that looks like a wood floor. We picked times that are 12” by 6’. Hardly any grout and again do easy to keep clean. These are easier on the feet than the shiny 36x36 tiles but I love them both. Area rugs make it cozy getting out of bed and under the couch area as well., I like the porcelain tile that looks like pickled wood planks. However, installing a houseful of porcelain tile takes a lot of time. Yes, it feels cold to the feet. (Or cool on a hot day.) You’ll feel it more if you fall. It echos like a train station. The solution to that is area rugs, but they are more of a tripping hazard than wall-to-wall .
