Montessori pedagogy, being the core foundation of BCMCS’s educational belief, will once again be thematic focal point of our monthly school messages. For this year, within each month’s school message, I will both relay and expand upon a quote from Maria Montessori. Fitting the start of the school year is the quote, "The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'" This quote is textbook at this juncture of the school year, as it emphasizes two distinct educational goals. First, it embodies the ideal of fostering independence, for Montessori's philosophy is centered on such as she believed it is the key to a child's holistic development. She saw children as naturally driven to become capable, self-sufficient human beings, and that the role of education is to support this innate drive rather than hinder it. As well, the quote exemplifies the ideal that students develop a love for learning. Promoting a love of learning is at the very heart of Montessori philosophy. For Montessori, education is not about filling a child with facts or forcing them to conform to a rigid curriculum.
