In view of these prices, I have trouble arguing with a ~$10 hatchet. I’d expect it'll be a dog and maybe the mangiest mutt of a hatchet ever seen, but it’d still be an appropriately priced beater and meant to be abused. I may try the new “axe” (in truth, hatchet) throwing craze on for size. If I do, ~$10 sounds good for a starter thrower. I expect I'll have to reprofile it to get it to work, but that’d be part of the deal with a ~$10 hatchet. If the weather, my health and a few other things cooperate, I may find out how my “dirt cheap beater thrower” theory works out in the next month. If the head falls off of the handle after a couple throws, I’ll laugh it off and write it off as one more of my countless failed theories., Fast forward to beginning of last year, 2020, I decided to haft the harbor freight hatchet with a wooden handle to satisfy a bushclass elective. I had already thinned the cheeks down once. And I decided to take them down even more with a set of flap wheels and angle grinder before hafting it. The steel on mine is soft., Harbor Freight also sells 6x8 and 8x10 canvas tarps in green. All are in 10oz canvas. I'm leaning towards the 8x10 tarp, as that's a size I'm more used to and would be less work than having to modify and waterproof a drop cloth..
