the leads are solid and the story is engaging enough, i've given this a 9 to level out the people who will downvote this wrongly, it's actually more like a 7.Worth reccomending to people who you know are confidently wrong on other subjects and see what they make of it, they aren't an easy group of people to communicate with and listening to them drone on about subjects they know nothing about is tedious, but who knows, maybe holding up a mirror may help.7peter0969While it's script could improve regarding it's structure and pacing, it's a slow-burn yet good exploration character study about the individuals who are anti-government "sovereign citizens" filled with a strong emotional and tenseful atmosphere, good direction, and two great performances from Nick Offerman and Jacob Trembaly.What director Christian Swegal does well is that capturing the essence of what sovereign citizens are like, capturing their selfish and controversial beliefs without feeling forced or messy. The direction on the tone, the writing and what the purposes for the characters and choices were realistic and tense. Including great themes about the poison settings of indoctrination amongst people and how it can cause an affect on society. Alongside with the good camerawork and soundtrack, as mentioned, Offerman and Trembaly provides great performances to their chilling and uneasy characters, allowing them to have some great dialogue moments and tension between the topics of father and son.Regarding it's faults, the emotional layer on certain elements and some writing moments did feel a bit short. As if there were patterns and decisions that could have been a bit better. But overall, it's strong debut direction and atmosphere showcases the extremist and unfortunate relevance of today's society in the United States.7colinholmes-61171So apt for the world we are living and an important portrayal of an element of society that poses an eternal threat to that society.Since reading about Timothy McVeigh years ago I've always been somewhat fascinated by the disassociated, those who drift further and further into their very own world of indoctrination and delusion. I know people of that ilk, albeit mild in nature by comparison. I'd imagine everyone knows at least one.Contrary to other comments, I liked the pacing. The acting was excellent. Offerman totally convincing and memorable. Every conspiracy theorist should be made to watch movies like this to see where delusion can lead to.7johnperugiaThis movie is gut turning. Most people recognize the sovereign movement from online videos showing citizens being difficult with law enforcement and then being arrested. What I find important about this film, while it is barely touched directly by the films dialogue, is its presentation of mental illness brought on by trauma. Near the end of the film we see a very brief discussion on a tragedy that, if offered up sooner, would have given the viewer a bit more of a grip on Jerry's mindset and why he had taken up the path he chose. While this movie is a slow burn it is also a rather fast spiral of decision making which held my interest till the end.I think this and other films like it should be given note since it reflects the actions of people in other real life events. Being able to recognize when someone has fallen down the rabbit hole and landed themselves and others into dangerous waters is useful in life and benefits society. We see the young teen, Joe, in this story obviously confused and without true understanding of the peril he is in. We see the theme of growing up thinking life is "normal" when it's far from it.4redban02I decided to watch this one because of the positive reviews, the strong cast, and the compelling synopsis . In the end, I was disappointedThe synopsis suggests that the film is about how an anti-government father / son duo kill a policeman and face a manhunt thereafter. Consequently, I had the expectation that this movie would be an action/suspense/thriller. In truth, that details provided in the synopsis (ie the killing of the cop + the manhunt) don't happen until way close to the ending. The movie is a slow-burn adult drama, centered more on a father/son message (though to be honest, I don't quite understand fully what the movie is trying to say on that topic). Alongside Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay, the movie contains some scenes involving Dennis Quaid and his son. The scenes with Quaid and his son are low points, and the movie doesn't do a fine job of integrating their story with Offerman/Tremblay's.Nick Offerman gives a good performance as an unhinged anti-government extremist. Some scenes where he deals with authorities and law enforcement feel so real. His son played by Jacob Tremblay doesn't leave much impression though; Tremblay character is silent and nondescript.
