There's early carnage at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The first round is nearly complete, as there is one match remaining to be completed on Wednesday, and four of the top 10 seeds in both the men's and women's draws are already heading back home after a wild first two days at the All England Club. The biggest upset on the men's side came on Tuesday when No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev was taken down by Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Centre Court. Rinderknech fought hard to keep himself in front throughout and managed to never have his serve broken over the five-set marathon match. Other men's upsets included No. 7 seed Lorenzo Musetti being eliminated by Nikoloz Basilashvili, No. 8 seed Holger Rune going down against Nicolas Jarry and No. 9 seed Daniil Medvedev losing to Benjamin Bonzi. On the women's side, the top two American players are out after the first round, as No. 2 seed Coco Gauff and No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula were both beaten in straight sets. Gauff's loss was particularly stunning as she was coming off winning the French Open three weeks ago, but she struggled with her serve and the hard-hitting Dayana Yastremska and found herself exiting London much earlier than she hoped. They are joined by No. 5 seed Qinwen Zhang and No. 9 seed Paula Badosa as top 10 seeds to lose in what was a wild first round. In total 13 of the 32 men's seeds lost in the first round, while 10 of the 32 women's seeds were knocked out in the first two days of play. That has created some chaos in the brackets on both sides, but most of the pre-tournament favorites remain. On the men's side, top-seed Jannik Sinner cruised in straight sets to open his tournament, while the two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz needed five sets to get by veteran Fabio Fognini. Those two remain the heavy favorites, with Alcaraz at 23/20 and Sinner at 17/10 at BetMGM, with 7-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djoković (5-1) the closest to them after a 4-set win in his opener, as he . While seeds were dropping left and right, it was a solid start for the American men. Taylor Fritz survived a 5-set scare while Ben Shelton, Francis Tiafoe and Tommy Paul all cruised in straight sets as they try and become the first winner from the states since Pete Sampras won Wimbledon in 2000.
