Tom Fitzgerald got his first crack at drafting at No. 50, where he took Conrad Fondrk from the U.S. National Team Development program. Fondrk is slated to play at Boston University next summer. Pronman had him ranked No. 83 in the class, so the Devils reached a bit in his eyes, but colleague Scott Wheeler ranked him at No. 49. With their second second-round pick the Devils snagged Ben Kevan, who played in the USHL next season. The Devils have had success with second-round picks in the past few years with recently-signed Lenni Hämeenaho in 2023 and Seamus Casey in 2022, so New Jersey has to hope one — if not both — Fondrk and Kevan can also emerge as potential NHLers.AdvertisementDevils chief scout Mark Dennehy described Fondrk as a first-round talent. He noted he dealt with injuries but said “Those types of things heal, and his ceiling as an all-around player — really a dynamic producer — was worth the risk.” He said Kevan, who is headed to Arizona State, is a goal scorer. “We didn’t think he’d be there and he was.”Gustav Hillström was New Jersey’s best value pick, according to Pronman. He had him at No. 67, and the Devils took him in the fourth round at No. 114. He’s a 6-foot-2 center from Sweden. New Jersey also added a goalie with Trenten Bennett in the fourth round. At 6-foot-8, his size in the net is certainly an advantage.—Peter Baugh2025 Draft Grade: CThe Devils didn’t select until 50 this year. I think their first two picks, Conrad Fondrk and Benjamin Kevan, are both highly talented forwards, but they were inconsistent this season and are not sure things. I can’t be confident this class will produce an NHL regular, even though there was a decent amount of talent among their Day 2 picks., With the 63rd pick in the NHL Draft, the New Jersey Devils selected Ben Kevan.
