Bruce W. Nyland, 78, of Willow Valley Lakes Manor in Lancaster County, formerly of Pottstown and Malvern, husband of Aleen (Coddington) Nyland, died Friday at the Glen at Willow Valley Healthcare Center. Born in Albany, New York, he was a son of the late Elvada (Champine) and Fred W. Nyland. A 1941 graduate of Albany High School, he earned a degree in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He worked for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad from 1947 to 1969 and later worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. When the Consolidated Railroad Corporation was organized in 1976, he was one of the engineers selected to serve on the pre-conveyance team that activated the new system. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a former member, trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist of Malvern. He was a member of the First Baptist of Lancaster. He was a member of the American Railway Engineers Association, the Roadmasters of Maintenance and Way Association, and the AARP. He was the champion bowler of the Willow Valley Lakes Manor bowling team for several seasons. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Michael W. Nyland of Nicholson, Lackawanna County; one daughter, Barbara N. Caden of York; and two grandchildren. Services will be private. Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery in Albany, New York. Contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Lancaster, 612 North Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602-2210; or to the Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
