Fresh leaf lettuce out of the garden. I hated it. I would say I was the transition kid. My brothers and sisters before me would have had it mostly seasonal. By the time I was in grade school (say about 5th grade) mom had already transitioned from mostly home baked bread to bought sliced bread, had started buying a lot of stuff like store bought Otts Famous Dressing (spices and soybean oil) and was buying head lettuce while still having a pretty big garden with fresh stuff like leaf lettuce and tomatoes. Always a can of Crisco sitting near the stove. And went from fresh milk from on farm cows to bought and pasteurized milk. Man I sure liked the store bought milk over the home grown stuff that always had cream floating on the top and tasted like onions in the spring. That also happened early on in my grade school years.You would have to go back at least another generation to get much before not a lot of store bought dressings. Mom would sometimes buy seasoning mixed and mix up with vinegar and oil (soy or corn oil) and I hated anything like that. Mostly meat and potatoes. Salad was either an afterthought or seasonal thing. We did eat wild dock greens in the spring but not as a salad. Instead cooked down like spinach. Hated those too as a kid as well as spinach out of gallon cans that we were fed cooked down at school a couple times a week. They made us clean our lunch plate before we could go back for seconds of anything including desert. That meant you had to eat the disgusting spinach.
