One man traveled from Virginia to uncover a note from his mother, penned 50 years ago, while another man discovered his 1975 wedding invitation still intact. Photos from the 1975 time capsule.NBC NewsTrish Davisson Fisher, whose father, Harold Davisson, created and maintained the town’s coveted time capsule, that thousands of people received letters and packages previously held in the giant memory box. “There were packages from, I’m going to say, 3,000 people, letters and packages, letters to themselves, letters to the grandchildren, letters to their heirs,” she said. A letter from the time capsule.NBC NewsThough Davisson built a ventilation system into the capsule to keep moisture at bay, the artifacts were found in varying conditions. Fisher estimated that about 80% of people should be able to “get their items back,” while about 20% “are going to be disappointed.” According to his daughter, Davisson “wanted to wait for his grandchildren to remember life in 1975.” “I thought my dad was crazy,” Fisher said. “I think you need to be pushing 45 to realize how fast time goes, how little time you have to make memories with those you love. And that was what he was trying to do.” In 1983, the family learned that the capsule, which is built into the ground, had lost the world record title from the World Record Academy, NBC News reports. In order to reclaim the distinction, the family build a pyramid atop the capsule. Given the magnitude of the monument, a crane was required to break the capsule open, revealing not only the multitudes of mementos, antiques and heirlooms, but also walls that appeared to be artistically painted in 1975. Fisher said the capsule will be on permanent display for generations to step back into 1975.
